“Helping the sharp end of the business put policies into practice”

Niels Vanlaer, Marine & HSEEQ Director

“Our Marine and HSEEQ team supports the Business Units with specialized knowledge in the fields of Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality. We do not merely define the company policy in these areas, but also cooperate with DPAs, technical superintendents, and crewing managers to put these policies into practice. A prominent example is Taking the Safety LEAD. It is not about which regulations to follow and which manual to apply. It is about how each and every one of us puts safety into practice. Of course Marine and HSEEQ sets out the safety policy, but we also measure how well we are performing and we follow up on any actions required to improve. We provide specialized tools to support the crew and the Business Unit colleagues ashore, such as training courses and materials, coaching, feedback and evaluations. By helping the sharp end of the business to transform theory into practice, we can continuously improve on our overall performance and serve our customers better.”

Compliance with the highest international standards

Our Marine and HSEEQ department stipulates and manages our procedures to ensure compliance with the highest international standards on matters of health, safety, environment and quality. Dedicated Marine Superintendents per Business Unit support our Technical Superintendents and crew through surveys, certification and vettings.

The quality and safety of operations depends on crew awareness. A continuous information flow to the vessels is complemented with monthly on board HSEEQ meetings, daily co-ordination meetings and integrated risk assessments for regular processes.

To guarantee high level awareness we also run a company-wide programme about safety, Taking the SAFETY LEAD. It encompasses genuine improvements of Health and Safety management in practice based on our seafarers’ input and is being incorporated in the appraisal process for our sea staff.

The security of our people and our assets are systematically assessed and monitored throughout. We carry out regular full emergency drills which combine simultaneous real-life simulations on board and in the office with the participation of clients, classification societies, flag states, regulatory authorities and compliance organizations.

Environmental performance and energy efficiency

In addition to complying with international regulations EXMAR Ship Management also endeavours to continuously improve its environmental performance at sea through:

  • a Green Passport for all new tonnage which ensures eventual safe ship recycling;
  • tests with silicone-based anti-fouling paint for ship hulls;
  • Vessels equipped with ballast water treatment plants are operational in all ports to minimise the influx of alien marine species;
  • a comprehensive waste management system for the fleet, including waste recycling;
  • software tools which contribute significantly to energy efficiency and fuel consumption optimisation, such as:
    • VICUS and ECO ASSISTANT trim optimisation software;
    • a revised Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) on all vessels of the LNG fleet;
    • Combustion Analyser Trend software on board our LPG fleet;
    • KYMA application software to monitor the ship’s performance and steam plant efficiency;
    • Cargo conditioning planning for the optimisation of cargo cooling on LPG vessels
    • SPOS Weather Routing software which charts the most efficient routes.
  • a fleet wide initiative to introduce a condition-based maintenance system on board LPG and LNG vessels, which aims to optimise performance and minimise downtime.
