Specialised technical training with Original Equipment Manufacturers and EXMAR Academy trainings in line with the latest STCW 2010 requirements ensure our seafarers are properly certified and up-to-date. To further develop talent onshore, personnel is sponsored to take academic courses.

Additional initiatives ensure our specialists can operate as a complementary and tightly-knit team.

  • The Staff Development Programme (SDP) based on action-centred leadership for senior officers and shore staff. Since its inception in 2008, over two hundred colleagues have been involved in this tailor-made modular programme spread over a three year time period.
  • Simulation ship handling exercises using waterborne vessel models at the Warsash Academy in the UK.
  • Annual seafarer conferences in Antwerp, Mumbai, Manila, Split, Odessa, and Buenos Aires maintain contact between shore and sea staff and provide the latest company and technical updates through both internal and external speakers.
  • The Taking the SAFETY LEAD programme for both crew across all ranks of the fleet and shore staff at all levels in the office.
  • Regular appointment of junior and senior officers to short term assignments on shore to provide invaluable input on continuous improvement projects and to broaden their own skills base. The assignments often result in senior shore appointments at a later stage in the seafarer’s career.

Academic cooperation and cadet training programme

Senior personnel regularly lecture at maritime academies, universities and other education establishments, such as the Universities of Antwerp and Delft and the Antwerp Maritime Academy. EXMAR Ship Management regularly gives cadets and young seafaring members the opportunity to complete assignments on board and at its offices.

In addition to its longstanding cooperation with the Antwerp Maritime Academy in Belgium, EXMAR Ship Management actively supports the Caribbean Maritime Institute in Jamaica and works closely with the Mapua School and PHILCAMSAT training centre in the Philippines, which is recognised by the Belgian Flag State in terms of training excellence. They are all recruitment sources of young talent for the company.
